Kids Need More Sleep

August 14th, 2015 Written By Carol Pawley

It was surprising to learn that fewer than one in five middle schools and high schools start after 8:30 in the morning, in spite of the fact that The American Academy of Pediatrics recommended an 8:30 A.M. or later start time for schools.

The Secretary of Education would like to see more school districts consider delaying start times because that delay could help boost students’ academic performance and reduce tardiness and absenteeism.

It is a known fact that lack of sleep can lead to a cascade of health issues, including higher body weight, lower academic performance and a greater likelihood for substance abuse. Educating parents and school system decision-makers about the impact of sleep deprivation on adolescent health and academic performance might lead to adoption of later start times.
