Practical Remodeling Advice

Getting ready to remodel your home?  You may feel a bit anxious, and this is perfectly normal.  However, being prepared for the challenge can help manage your expectations and calm your nerves. Here are the top five reasons why  you will need to have patience from beginning to end.

DUST – If you can, close off the construction area from the rest of your house with a compression-fit temporary wall.

NOISE – Whining saws, scratching Sheetrock sanders and thumping nail guns followed by bellowing compressors: in short, little peace or quiet.

DECISIONS – Where exactly do you want the shower-head? Brushed nickel or satin nickel? There will be a multitude of decisions to make.

DELAYS – You and your contractor will be guided by a schedule that assumes the world is a perfect place. It’s not.

SURPRISES – Expect the unexpected, even if your contractor is a saint and the project is on budget. Having cash on hand that’s a bare minimum of 10 percent above contract for contingencies will help reduce your stress….20 percent and a glass of wine every night may provide total calm.

One last thing, count on hundreds of questions that you’ll need to answer as your project proceeds, and hang in there — your fatigue will be short lived when you get to move back into your newly remodeled space.
