A Deck Can Add Value To Your Home

January 15th, 2015 Written By Carol Pawley

Wood Deck with Built In Furniture

Adding a deck to your home, especially in South Florida, is a worthwhile home improvement project. In fact, according to Remodeling Magazine, a wood deck addition project returns an average of about 80% of the original investment.

One of the reasons that a deck is such a good investment is because it increases living area at a minimal cost per square foot. Careful consideration should be given to where the deck is located. A vital factor to consider is how to access it from the house. The kitchen back door won’t do the job, a better solution is a French door or slider that gives primary access from a living room, dining room, or family room while being handy to the kitchen. If the doorway can also be positioned to offer an expansive view, all the better.

The experts recommend to make sure the deck neither swamps your yard, nor becomes lost in it. Your local codes may set standards for how much of your lot can be occupied by a deck, and how close a deck can be to your lot line. Check these limitations early in your planning with your city or county building department.

Work out how to preserve your privacy and also consider the path of the sun and the location of shade trees.

Florida is Third Most Populous State in the Nation

January 12th, 2015 Written By Carol Pawley

Move over New York! With a total population of 19.9 million, Florida is the nation’s third most populous state behind California and Texas. California remained the nation’s most populous state in 2014, with 38.8 million residents, followed by Texas, at 27.0 million.   According to Stanley Smith, program director for the Bureau of Economic and Business Research at the University of Florida, “The actual ranking is of little consequence. What’s more important are the underlying trends, namely that Florida has been growing substantially faster than New York for many decades.”

Florida has New York to thank in part for its growth, as New Yorkers account for the state’s single largest group of new residents from within the United States. Despite public opinion, adults in the prime of their careers-not retirees-are driving most of Florida’s population growth. Many of our new residents come for employment in medical services, biotechnology, financial services, and other higher paying jobs.

In terms of percentage growth, Florida has ranked as one of the fastest growing states in the nation for more than 100 years. In raw numbers, Florida achieved its No. 4 ranking 34 years ago, when it leaped from 7th place over several Midwestern states.  Now the Sunshine State has jumped to #3 by averaging 803 new residents a day, according to U.S. Census Bureau.

Here are the top five most populous states in the nation:

1. California

2. Texas

3. Florida

4. New York

5. Illinois
