Here is a recap of the story behind our famous Miami Book Fair International…In the early 1980’s, visionaries from  Miami-Dade College and Books & Books got together to explore ways to highlight the history of famous local authors, shine the spotlight on our community’s writers and poets, and bring  together authors with publishers, and  their public.  In essence, their dream was to make Miami a destination for literary tourism.

That dream became a reality in 1984 with the birth of  Books by the Bay, which later became the Miami Book Fair International.  The two-day street fair was successful from the start. In 1985, such renowned writers as Mario Vargas Llosa, Garrison Keillor and Allen Ginsberg appeared to read to grateful audiences. By the next decade, it had been renamed and was attracting thousands of attendees and noteworthy authors like John Updike, Isabelle Allende, Tom Wolfe, Alice Walker and Hunter S. Thompson.

Today, The Miami Book Fair International is recognized as the finest and largest literary event in the nation.  The fair opens this Friday  at MDC’s Wolfson Campus, in downtown Miami.  It runs November 16-24; the Street Fair kicks off next Friday, November 21, and ends on Sunday, November 24.  The Street Fair is free, some events require tickets.

The highlight of the Street Fair is the Festival of Authors, with more than 450 authors reading and discussing their work. More than 250 publishers and booksellers will be exhibiting and selling books, with special features like the Antiquarians, who showcase signed first editions, original manuscripts, and other collectibles.

If there are children in your family don’t miss taking them to visit the Children’s Alley at the Street Fair. Activities include theater, arts-and-crafts, storytelling, and readings by children’s book authors. Comics and graphic novels are once again featured, and a new section just for kids and teens, as well as presentations over the weekend by renowned graphic novelists and illustrators are scheduled.

It’s no surprise we have so many international and out-of-state real estate buyers shopping for condos and second homes. They come to events like the Miami Book Fair International and fall in love with our beautiful city. In all fairness, what’s not to love?
