Coral Gables to Spend $1 million on Monuments in Two Traffic Circles

October 17th, 2012 Written By Carol Pawley

As part of Coral Gables $27 million dollar Neighborhood Renaissance Program, the city will spend $1 million on monuments at two traffic circles on Segovia Street, at the intersection with Biltmore Way & Coral Way. These will be the newest monuments in 85 years. The new monuments must incorporate a fountain feature, at the request of Vice Mayor William Kerdyk Jr., who was mindful of maintaining a through-line with George Merrick’s distinctive design. The monuments should convey themes of civic identity and civic beauty. The circles were selected for their high-profile locations. Since the two traffic circles face each other, the idea is to have the artist design a monument that “talks” back and forth between the circles, forming an aesthetic relationship. The city plans to seek out prospective artists by year’s end using major artistic websites around the world. The monuments are expected to be in place in about two years.
